A Friday Funny: Morrow Stories!

This morning when I was taking Orison to school, Morrow was hanging out with our nanny. He told her, “I hear the ferlickity truck!”

Any guesses?

After a few more questions, she deciphered that he was saying recycling truck!

Later in the morning he was telling her about a movie and kept talking about the “Colosorus.” [kuh-LAH-suh-rus]

He was talking about a rhinoceros! Cute!

He also says “Tamorine” for submarine. And he has “tamorines” on his Pull-Ups (which he’s still using. Because he’s still not fully trained).

All of these things are too cute for even this Speech Language Pathologist to correct, except maybe that potty thing (still working on it-ARGH!)!

Also, if you know me in person (IRL if you will), you know I’m a word-clipper. My BFF Danielle and I have been like this since college. It’s a mother’s pure joy to know her children are following her example.

Morrow’s been known to use “fave” for favorite and “Sars!” for sorry.

Be still my heart. This kid is too much. I think I might cry tears of joy the first time he uses “adorbs!”

Oh dear! Word clipping.. I didn’t know it had an actual name.

I have a slightly embarrassing story about some word clipping back in college..

I happened to ask a shy man if he happened to have a dictionary. But in word clipping style. Yikes!

My oldest (now almost 15) called Nutri-grain bars “yuckabon.” Took us some time to figure out what he meant. We still call them yuckabon.

My youngest called “taking a shower” “taking a show-ee” (rhymes with how-ee). The funny thing is we kept on saying it while he grew out of it. Then he asked my husband why he called a shower a “show-ee.” LOL.

Exactly. We’d convert to their ‘word’ and then got sad when they learned the proper word. We still call baths ‘tubbies’ and fruit snacks ‘frums’ and the kids think we’re the weird ones. :-P

    AAAAHH! I love it!!!

Kenny’s latest word mishap that was hilarious and horrible involved the cartoons Clifford and Sesame Street. I thought he was saying “Big Bird dead”, and couldn’t figure out why he would say something like that! I finally figured out he was saying “Big red dog”! That was a relief! lol.

My husband and I do the opposite – we either extend words (so husband becomes hubbahoo and wife is wifeywoo) or completely change them (so dog becomes woggle or squirrel becomes squidgey). It’s like speaking a different language sometimes! Can’t wait until we have children and they start doing the same thing!

“Ferlickity” is my new favorite word, hands down. Tell Morrow I said thanks! :)

My second-born had a knack for this skill, too. He called a helicopter a “hockadoo” (which our family still calls it.) Strangely, he called this common toddler toy (http://www.amazon.com/Chicco-65261000000-Activity-Baby-Walker/dp/B0009OD1DK) a “shrimp-bone-shrap-bone”. Huh??

  7. JenR says:

Do you go the other extreme and make portmanteaus as well? I bet your family would be really good at that.

my 19mo old who is very verbal has a word for “I want to push the stroller around the park” – aweega! But my kids tend to word clip then combine them.

  8. Anita says:

our kids called a motor cycle a soderbycle and some 20 years later my H and I still say that – btw Morrow is one CUTE kid!
