1st Day of 1st Grade–It’s Golden!

Here in Minnesota we have a thing called a “Golden Birthday.” I’m sure it exists in other places too, I’d just never heard about it until I moved here. So a golden birthday goes like this: if you’re born on the 4th of the month, your golden birthday is when you turn 4.
I was lucky, because my birthday’s on the 23rd, and I found out about the golden birthday when I was 22 (phew!).
I’m proposing a Golden School Day…
- 1st day of 1st grade? Golden!
- 2nd day of 2nd grade? Golden!
…and so on.
But seriously, I’m just very glad that Orison had a great 1st day of 1st grade. He’s totally excited to be back at school, and that’s one of the best things a parent can hope for, school-wise.
How’d your kids do going back to school? You doing alright, moms and dads?

I think I’m pretty emotional about *anticipating* sending Elizabeth to preschool. Today in the parking lot of Target a lady told me she just dropped her daughter off at her first day of Kindergarten. My eyes started watering and I got a huge knot in the back of my throat.
Anyway, I’m hoping I get it all out before next Thursday. I mean seriously, it’s *just* preschool! I’m ridiculous!
Yes! Mine was when I turned 21 – but we (I?) call it a champagne birthday.
Kind of like the “Billy Joe McGuffey” song from the Jonah movie from VeggieTales?! Of course, Billy Joe kept getting hurt, so maybe not.
Such a big boy! I love it, I love seeing you both, and I love you!
We have golden birthdays in Florida, too. Mine was my 18th, which was not a great birthday, but the idea is fun. I love the idea of golden school days. Finding small things to celebrate is something my mom was (and is) so good at. I find it has taught me to cultivate gratitude and joy in the simplest thing.
Golden birthdays are alive and well in Kentucky! :-)
My golden birthday is this year.. will be 24 in oct… nothing exciting going on there… although i do enjoy the idea of golden school days… kinda makes it exciting for kids who dont enjoy school! my nieces just srtated kindergarden.. and my nephew is in 3rd grade.. maybe next year we will hhave golden school days for them as they are all homeschooled!! aunt val can “kidnap” them for awhile. :)
awe, that’s so sad. i didn’t know about the golden birthday. i missed mine…by about 15 years…
Be sure to take lots of photos and scrapbook if you can–either traditionally, or digital–these are such beautiful memories to reflect on over the years. And even sweeter at graduation day.
Speaking of graduation day, our youngest is a senior this year, so this year is both amazing and a little bittersweet. It’s off to a great start. I thought it might be grueling, but it has been challenging enough without being overwhelming so far, as we are both homeschooling and working at home.
Also, our youngest grandson started Kindergarten–so we have a finish line and a starting point in the family this year.
The golden school day–I love it–keep it going!
Yay for Orison (and mom!) LOVE the golden school day idea — if I hurry, I can catch my youngest’s today! :-) My golden birthday was 7/7/77 and I turned 7 years old! There was even a little blurb in my hometown newspaper!! We definitely celebrate golden birthdays in our house — next one is when Shae turns 29…
Haha, I thought of golden birthdays when I was a kid, and I’ve been waiting patiently ever since … mine will be when I turn 28 in 2016. :) I’ve never heard of the name of them, though. Now I have more to look forward to! :D
Back to school for us means a busy house. Kids ages 6, 5, 3, 1 and we homeschool! If I knew how to make a crazy face on here I would… lol
Apparently my last birthday was the golden one. I even said to my sister when she called “I’m 27 on the 27th!” But soon I will be 28.
we celebrate those as champagne birthdays, but I like your idea of the golden grade celebration – we should continue to find reasons to celebrate! i have only one returning to school – he’s in his 2nd year of post-secondary school :)
Wanna know a real bummer? When your fam makes a big deal out of the golden birthday, and you siblings are all born in the beginning of the month, and your birthday comes on . . . the 27th. I’m just sayin’.
I, too, have heard of golden birthdays (I’m in Oregon). We celebrated my daughter’s 10th birthday last year on 10/10/10!! She invited 10 guests and we went on a scavenger hunt to 10 locations and had 10 desserts for her party. We may have gone a little overboard…:)
Glad your little guy had a great first day. All 3 of mine did, too! Can’t believe they’re all in school…makes me a little sad.
