Crock Pot Cooking and Weight Gain? A Discussion.

So I made these really yummy ribs in the Crock Pot today. I haven’t made this particular recipe in a couple years, just because I forgot about it! (Don’t you love when you kind of forget about a good recipe and then it crops back up?) Anyway… it’s super good, and the ribs are so tender that the meat literally falls off the bone.
I’m sitting here typing this, smelling the yummy goodness and already hungry for supper. Which leads me to ask:
If you’re cooking in your Crock Pot, do you eat more that day?
I feel like I’m smelling delicious food all day and salivating, and therefore I want to EAT!!! So far I’ve avoided a full-0n pig-out, but I don’t know if I can make it till 5:30. That’s HOURS from now!!!!
If I cooked in the Crock Pot regularly, I feel like I’d gain weight. Agree? Disagree?
Talk amongst yourselves.

I think it depends on the content of the recipe more than the mode of cooking. :) But what I am really interested in is your recipe. After your description, I’m thinking I need to try your recipe…can you post it? :)
Hmmm… I don’t know the answer to your question… I do know however that “they” say if your kitchen walls are painted a warm color you will eat more and if the walls are painted a cool color you will eat less… lol.
I do need that recipe though! We had crock pot BBQ pulled pork last night; I only ate one sandwhich, but I did make sure it was liberally filled. ;)
I discovered when I was pregnant and couldn’t stand the smell of food that if I put the crock pot out in the garage all day, I didn’t smell it and we could have a hot, cooked meal (too bad I didn’t figure this out until my last pregnancy!). Maybe that would help you not to want to eat all day?
A friend of mine always puts her crockpot in the garage because she doesn’t like the smell in her house. I love it, but I can understand why someone wouldn’t.
I don’t *think* I eat more when I use my crockpot, but I’ve never considered it.
One thing I’ve noticed about crockpot meals (this is a bit off of the subject you’re mentioning) is just that they’re usually very high carb, and thus fattening anyhow! Since I’ve been doing low-carb (and have lost a bunch of weight), I haven’t been able to use my crockpot almost at all because all of my recipes have some sort of high starch content (rice, noodles, potatoes, etc.). But other than that, I don’t think that crockpot smells make me eat more, because after a while, I can’t tell that they’re there!!
More importantly, will you give us the recipe??? I LOVE new crockpot recipes.
(I’m the crazy gal who has a little guy that was born on the same day as your twins. But I’ve been stalking you a lot longer than that. ;)) After Elijah was born, someone sent over a meal that contained pulled-pork from a crock pot. I wasn’t a super huge pulled pork fan before that, but now it’s a regular meal around here… and I find myself opening it up to snatch a piece here and there as the smell gets more intense… just to see if it’s the right amount of tender yet, of course…
I second looking for that recipe. I’m heading back to work in a month and am hoping the crock pot will be my best friend!
I can’t really smell that well– so that is in my favor. But I like the idea of sticking it in the garage or spare room/basement to keep it farther away.
I only made crockpot meals for weeks after I had my 2nd baby- it was a life saver!
Great blog on crock pot cooking. This woman cooked in her crock pot every day for a whole year.

I’m pretty sure I’ve gained at least 1/2 pound just by LOOKING at your PICTURE of those ribs cooking in the crock pot!
This is not a direct answer to your question, Molly, but I gotta say this: Whenever I cook something in the crockpot I just feel like an AMAZING person all day, just because I have dinner all ready to roll and it’s 10 am. I use the crockpot for a serious ego boost!
Totally! This is *exactly* why I love it so much.
Cooking in the Crock Pot also requires that I have my act together (meat thawed, time to prep in the morning, etc.) and that just isn’t the case too often in my situation. :/
Crockpot as edifier and encourager — I like this! :)
Too, I could send more ribs from the farm, Molly!? :)
Grace and Peace in Him, friend…

You do know you can totally throw frozen meat in the crockpot, right?! I rarely thaw my meat, one of the joys of my crockpot. I usually put it on high for an hour or so and then turn it to low, but I’ve not had any problems at all…
Hi Molly (et al)–
Speaking of the crockpot, i’ve been hunting for a good recipe for pulled pork–any body got anything? I can get the pork roasts over here in England but haven’t got a clue about the flavorings. This would be a great summer staple which I would be happy to gain weight by smelling/eating all day—if I had a recipe.
