Twin Survival Tip #4: Dry Shampoo

A couple months ago I met a mother of twins that has two sets of twins! And she was not insane, I’m happy to report.

She told me, “Molly, I have two words for you: Dry Shampoo.”

I had no idea what it was, but she eagerly explained it for me. So when your hair is greasy (which it will be if you’re the mother of multiples), you just spray this hairspray-like product onto the roots of the hair, let it dry a bit, and then comb it out.

It absorbs the oil and even volumizes the hair. Volume is such a luxury at this stage of the game, but it’s easy with dry shampoo!

I just went to Ulta and bought whatever one was on the shelf (about 8 bucks). But my friend who’s in the beauty industry told me that there are nicer dry shampoos out there. You can ask your hair stylist what brand they’d recommend if you’re into that.

Be aware that it comes out a little white-ish, so you need to comb it out, otherwise you look like you’ve gone gray in one day (which you might, if you have multiples). There are also colored ones out there, but the colored one I tried out seemed a little too dark for my hair color so I decided to just get the plain kind.

Do any of you use dry shampoo? What brands do you recommend?

I used this for my wedding (it was an all day affair)- it really works wonders!

I LOVE dry shampoo! Sometimes I think it makes my hair a tiny bit dull, so I’ll top it off with some shiny spray spritz or hairspray. But whatever, right? It’s way more preferable than greasy hair. I use Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleanser, the travel size bottle that is $10 at Sephora. A little pricey, but a little goes a long way, and I’ve had it for six months. Other favorites are Rene Furterer and Klorane.

  3. Wow, I have NEVER heard of this. And to make you feel better, not only moms of multiples skip out on frequent hair washing/baths/brushing of teeth/shaved legs. I’m sooo going to grab some of this soon. Thanks!! :)

Oh my goodness. I had no idea this product still existed. It was hot stuff when I was in college, though I never really got into using it. My hair was short and easy to wash. But think of all those 60s girls with loooong straight hair that got straightened by ironing it on the ironing board–not a do you want to redo any more frequently than necessary.

Dry shampoo has changed my life. I’ve tried all kinds but my favorite is by TIGI called Rockaholic Dirty Secret. It’s conveniently sold at the salon inside our Walmart. The extra cost is worth it. The brands Ojon and Klorane both work well.

  6. Gigi says:

Yep, I use it because I have very dry hair and I can’t shampoo more than a couple times a week or I’d have straw for hair! So I used dry shampoo to refresh and volumize on the in-between days. I use Unite, which is only available in some salons. It’s kinda pricey too. I’m sure there are others that work just as well for less $. I’d love one that smelled a bit better too…most of the Unite products smell fabulous, but this one’s just so-so.

Mom of 4 here (no multiples) to say THANK YOU!!! for sharing this information!!! If only someone had stepped up earlier in my life to tell me about dry shampoo, I’d might have had a lot less weird looks thrown my way.

    Keep the tips coming!

haha. i’m not even a mom, but i love dry shampoo! (i’m not dirty, i promise, i just have dry hair!)

also, Molly – a little baby powder (talc or cornstarch) at the temples and hair line (brushed through, of course) goes a LONG way in a pinch. ;]

  9. Jan says:

This product was big in the 70s or at least I remember tv ads for it. I think we tried it. And baby powder does work too. Molly, you should ask your mom if she ever tried it back in the day.

I hope your very cute little ones are doing well. I could do with a could of photos!

  10. Carol says:

Yep, Noel. I remember it from college also. In fact, I can even remember the jingle for it. http://www.posterwall.com/showthread.php?t=3097 or google “psssssst shampoo”.

    molly –

i’ve been reading your blog for awhile – i have three boys and a girl, too with one set of twins:) i just went back to work full time now that the twins are in pre-k and i am LIVING the nightmare of never having time to do my hair! i hadn’t heard of any kind but the one from sephora. can’t wait to try these other brands. thanks!

This is a recent discovery me too after reading this http://www.hdofblog.com/2010/06/hair-answers-shampoo-ing-less-often/ My daughter and I have thick, frizz-prone hair and dry shampoo is the answer. With 5 kids, including twins (fost-adopt) this has been very helpful. A daily shower yes, but 45 mins of blow drying to make it smooth is something I try to avoid.

  13. Amanda says:

I really really need to try this. Looking forward to meeting you this weekend, Molly!

  14. Chelsea Bass says:

I’m going to have to try this some time. My hair and skin tend to be on the oily side, but I get tired of washing it every day. I try to go every/other, but it doesn’t always work out.

On a side note, do you think it’s ever appropriate to tell a girlfriend that she needs to wash her hair more often?

  15. Molly, I’m so glad you tried it! I do have to give credit to my sister who saved me when my second set of twins were really young by giving me a can of dry shampoo.

Chelsea, yes, I think you can do it gingerly and lovingly. My sister said, “Hey I just discovered this product and I LOVE it. I know you’re busy and probably don’t get to wash your hair as often as you’d like, so I bought you a can too.”

By the way, yesterday I picked up the whole toy box and set in on the back patio when my older 3 were fighting over toys. It felt GREAT! They looked at me wide eyed, like I was insane…maybe it was a little crazy. I think any normal, rational mom might do something like this…right?!

  16. Melissa says:

I LOVE dry shampoo and I use Tresseme…it’s cheap…less than 5 dollars and you can get it at any supermarket!

  17. Kristy Bolte says:

AWESOME tip! I had no idea there was such a thing…though I am not a mom of multiples, I am a mom of many small children. In a pinch I resort to baby powder near the scalp and comb it through…will have to give dry shampoo a shot! :)

  18. Kristy Bolte says:

PS…did I just admit to shaking baby powder in my greasy hair? SHHHH

  19. michelle says:

Hey Molly! I read your blog once in a while, but never comment. Over here in Canada, I saw this post on dry shampoo, which came at the best moment – I had just enough time to go buy some and still catch my bus, and it saved me one hour of hair straightening in the middle of the week! Thank-you!!!! One more hour of marking quizzes… :)

  20. Hannah says:

Thanks for posting this, Molly! I’m a stranger (not a stalker….right?!) who has followed your blog for a long time, just never commented….but this was the perfect post for me! I appreciate everyone’s input in the comments! I’m not a mom – just a single working girl who sometimes sleeps through her alarm…..(for an hour……) and I need dry shampoo! I actually have liked the Pssst, but with my dark hair the white sometimes shows a bit much. I didn’t like the Blandi pronto for the same reason, but then I found the Blandi prono invisible dry shampoo spray and I like that! I wasn’t a fan of the Treseme foam, either, but now I have a few more to try based on the comments here! Thanks for starting the conversation! I LOVE dry shampoo!!

  21. Aimee says:

I have been using baby powder in my hair (every other day) since college…that was about 13 years ago! I tried the Tresseme…but always come back to the baby powder. It works the best! And its way cheap! Just shake a little and brush out. VOILA. No more greasy hair.

  22. Nikki says:

Wow, I’d never heard of this product, either. I’ve been thinking that washing my hair will probably start to be a rare luxury here in a couple months once #3 (under age 3) gets here! I will be making a trip to Ulta.

  23. Dana says:

My 99 year old grandmother moved in with us when she suddenly lost her hearing and balance. We discovered a shower cap that you warm in the microwave (though she prefers it at room temperature), put it on and massage through your hair for a couple of minutes. It leaves the hair damp, smelling clean and fresh and looks good. Granny has a wash and run style anyway, so this is perfect. It’s a little bit more expensive than the dry shampoo, but I can see it being nearly a luxury in between dry shampoos to at least get the wet and conditioned (it has conditioner in it) feel between dry washes.

My grandmother still doesn’t have her hearing back but she’s got enough balance now to bathe and shampoo in the shower again, so she doesn’t need it, but I’ve kept some on hand for the future.

  24. Okay, I thought you were gonna say they had dry shampoo for KIDS. And I was about to say, where do I get it? If only I could just spray down 4 kids.

I used to use something like this on my cat ;)

Also, in a pinch, baby powder in the hair is a quick clean.

  25. Ashley says:

I use Stila’s version of dry shampoo, and it’s fragranced too which is my favorite part! I think I just ordered it online from Amazon, and it lasts FOREVER even though it’s a little pricey. Definitely worth the splurge. :)

  26. Mom says:

I see someone already beat me to the punch. In my day we used baby powder until they came out with the real thing. It is amazing to see that they are always bringing back the stuff we only have told our children about but thought they would never hear about or see. Happy Hair Day!

  27. I’m not a mother yet, but I need this because I hate showering and my hair gets greasy easily (have I shared too much)? Anyhow, I know my husband would greatly appreciate it if I owned this product. Thanks for sharing!

  28. Katie says:

How funny! I’m in college and the girl across the hall JUST introduced me to dry shampoo like…yesterday. It’s my new best friend. My Bible class is at 8 in the morning, and those 20 extra minutes of sleep make a world of difference! I spray it before I go to bed and then straighten it in the morning. It’s a miracle. I have gotten so many compliments on my hair the days after I use it (which really cracks me up). It’s my new best friend.

  29. talley says:

    i just found this on stumbleupon… http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2BkZx7/crunchybetty.com/%253Fp%253D1007
    might help with the expenses!

Any one want to recommend one that comes in a small, easily-transportable container? I was just thinking that I needed to get dry shampoo for an upcoming backpacking trip! Thanks for the tips!
