My Winter Boots

Remember my post about my hot date on Friday? I told you that I got some winter boots.

In my world, for them to qualify as winter boots, they must be: (in this order)

  1. Waterproof
  2. Warm
  3. Pull-on (I have too many kids to do any lacing or zipping)
  4. Require no maintenance
  5. Fit well
  6. Be cute

In Minnesota, cute comes waaaay down the list.

By the end of last winter, water was pouring into the bottoms of my boots and having that awful wet and cold sloshy feeling for hours on end when you walk was just unacceptable.

This year I’ve decided to go full-force against the wetness and cold. I’ve gone with BOGS, people.

I’ve been going back and forth and back and forth about whether I like them or not. But at this point in my life, I really can’t care too much. Practicality must win. And since these were:

  1. Waterproof
  2. Warm (they claim to go to -40)
  3. Pull-on (they even have handles!)
  4. Require no maintenance (If I have to remember to spray leather boots once a month, I can pretty much guarantee that they’re going to be ruined)

they were the winners. I’m pretty sure they fit well. And the cuteness factor…well…

you can decide. But I already own them, so try to be nice, even if you don’t like them, okay? Thanks.

All I know is that they better keep my feet warm at the Fish House Parade this weekend in Aitkin, MN. It’s going to be in the single digits, people!

Hopefully I’ll be thanking God for whoever invented rubber boots! I know I’m going to be thanking God for whoever invented the Fish House Parade, you betcha!

Well, my opinion is that you’ve pulled off cute AND practical amazingly!

I swear, if my feet are cold, fuhgetabout the rest of me. It just flat doesn’t matter even if I’m in Eskimo attire…

  2. danielle says:

    um.

i want them and i’m getting them.

  3. Sara Shull says:

I vote cute! Love the -40 claim, too. Enjoy the parade and the rest of this season with warm and dry toes. :)

  4. They are cute! But I don’t know how you people live up there. Single digits in November?!?

  5. Shannon says:

    Cute!…and very Molly:)

  6. Melissa says:

Yep– we’re in Prague and have the same requirement list. I think they’re adorable.
Over here, though, you’d be wearing your jeans tucked in to those things.

  7. Nikki says:

I think they are cute. And…I’m glad you posted this because it’s just occuring to me that I don’t have any winter boots. I’ve been so focused on my kids’ winter gear needs this year that I forgot about my own! So I may have to check out the Bogs. Also, how fun that you are going to Aitkin. I used to work at a camp in nearby McGregor & on weekends would sometimes head to the old, 1-screen theater in Aitkin to catch a flick. Good times. :)

  8. Like you, I am not a native Minnesotan. But you said “You betcha” with such finesse, I feel like congratulating you.

Cute. Way cute. And you’re right – in Minnesota, that’s good for some bonus points.

  9. Ellie says:

    Cute!

but I went for Columbia. They do have a zipper, but they have covering behind the zipper, so if I zip it or not, it is still waterproof and warm. I just slide into them, and they are warm – even when I stand outside watching recess when for half an hour when it is below zero. Brr!

  10. Sarah says:

I think they’re cute! And quite practical. I bought some boots last year that I *thought* I could slip on pretty easily, but couldn’t unless I used both hands, sat down, and pulled. Yep, I wasn’t too thrilled once I figured that out (after buying them online). So good score!

  11. Andie says:

I can’t wait to see pics of the whole crew of you at Thanksgiving!

  12. Andie says:

I can’t wait to see pics of the whole crew of you at Thanksgiving! And I love your boots. They are definitely on the stylish end of things. When we moved here, I had the dorkiest ankle height zip ups. I finally got some cute ones last year and when I dug them out this year I was so relieved.

  13. Sara says:

I bought both my children Bogs this year and they LOVE them….so easy to get on and off. I have been toying with purchasing my own pair as well…you might have convinced me!

  14. jennapants says:

honestly, molly, i really think they are cute. 100%.

  15. Carol says:

They are cute, Molly, but even if they weren’t, who would see them in the snow?

  16. Chelsea Bass says:

I’d call them cute. Obviously as you said, they’re more about practicality. How cute can rubber boots be, after all? My list would have to include some kind of height. I like taller boots for trudging through the snow and tucking in my jeans.

  17. Kevin Ring says:

I just bought a pair of BOGS (men’s of course) last night. They’re amazingly comfortable.

I described it to my wife as pulling on a wetsuit for your foot. And since she’d never worn a wetsuit before the analogy fell a little short.

I am definitely not excited about the snow but at least I’m ready for it.

  18. Shannon Layfield says:

They aren’t my style but I think they’re cute!! Good job – I think I may have to check these out.

  19. Julie says:

They are a win/win. Excellent choice! And a very happy Thanksgiving to your crew. I thank God with you for your precious children.

  20. Haley says:

    I like them a lot! I might actually need a pair for myself… :)

Do those happen to be the jeans that I recommended to you?

  21. Heidi says:

Wow. Boots. But not cowboy boots. This is so foreign. Here in Tucson, we put away our flip flops just this past week actually. I like your boots! May they do just as they’re supposed to!

  22. Chris says:

    Yep, I’d say cute :)
    Happy Thanksgiving!
    Have fun at the parade…

  23. tiffany says:

Okay Molly, You asked for honesty….. :) When I first saw them I thought to myself “hmmmm, I’ve always thought Molly to have really good style…..but I’m not sure about these boots!” I’m going to redeem myself now: Then I saw the picture of you sporting them and they look TOTALLY cute! So there. Are we still friends? I can genuinely say I think they are adorable even though I probably would have walked right past them in the store without giving them a chance. My loss. Good shopping, girlie!

  24. Janie-sue says:

They are adorable. If they are also comfortable, I’d say that you really
hit the ball out of the park on this one! :-)

  25. Deborah says:

Love them – wonder if we have anything like it in Canada?

  26. Kiki Bacaro says:

    ABSOLUTELY adorable!

  27. Hi Molly! Lifetime friend of Dorothy (Urban Servant). I live in Alaska, and Bogs are the THING up here. And yes, they do keep feet warm to -40. True story. I bought them for my son, too, and not once has he complained about cold feet.
Super cute and super functional. Finally. A boot that works!

  28. emily says:

i TOTALLY almost bought bogs the other day! but i went with some canadian boots because i figured the canadians know their stuff. we just moved to minneapolis a couple of months ago (phillips neighborhood!!) and i am not totally prepared for the minnesota winter :) i didn’t feel like i could pull the bogs off but they look super cute on you!!

  29. Katie Roche says:

I’m pretty sure you could find a Vera Bradley bag to match those. ;)

And they’re certainly cuter than anything I managed to find in Minnesota that met your qualifications.

  30. Katie Roche says:

PS: Their Etsy shop is down right now til Thanksgiving, but these girls made these SUPER CUTE boots I wish I’d found when I was in MN. It looks like they just knit some super thick (and cute!!) cabled liners for heavy duty rubber boots. And they make like a little cuff that comes over the top. You should check the site after Thanksgiving!

  31. Anna Olson says:

these are very cute and modern looking! :) good job!!
    Happy Thanksgiving! Love ya.

  32. Carol Schneider says:

Love them! Have them in a different style! I wear them with pride!

  33. Betsy says:

Those are cute boots. We go for practical over cute any day in our house too :) These boots seem to have both!
I want to know if you wish you had gone with the taller boot…I would be afraid I would get snow down my boots when sledding or playing with kids (not a fun feeling).

  34. Martina says:

Score! I think they’re super cute as far as snow boots go. Great find, Molly. I hope they keep your feet warm and dry. :)

  35. Jenny Rigney says:

I would give ANYTHING for my winter boots to have straps to help me get them on! They drive me crazy and I just end up wearing flip-flops! :) And yes, I think these are cute!

  36. Kelly says:

    These are fanatastic!

  37. Alissa says:

Molly, I just bought these boots. The “port” ones. THEY ARE AMAZING. Thanks for recommending them :) Way better than Target slipper moccasins that I was wearing through the puddles.

  38. Marie says:

I happened upon your blog last year when your mother-in-law posted that you announced you were having twins. Since I was also pregnant and due in August 2010 I thought it would be fun to read your blog. Having a new baby the same time you had your twins (my 4th child–a son–was born 8/8) I totally forgot about your blog. A couple months ago I went back and read your past posts to “catch up” and stumbled upon this one about Bogs. Finding myself in the market for new boots (mine were chewed by our dog) I looked up this post again the other day because I remembered thinking how stinking cute these boots were. I bought them on Amazon and made sure to click through your site so I hope you get the benefit of that! Thanks for the advice :) I can’t wait til mine arrive!!
